Project: Evapotranspiration - permafrost feedbacks in tundra vegetation

I am interested in understanding processes that link the biosphere with climate and permafrost. In a joined research program with AWI and GFZ we focus on evapotranspiration in low Arctic tundra. This water flux is particularly important as it depends on vegetation and soil conditions and plays a crucial role in the energy, water and carbon budget. As evapotranspiration is an energy sink and may lead to drier, more insulating soils, it can potentially protect the permafrost. However, it is still unclear how different vegetation types and densities affect evapotranspiration and the related feedback mechanisms. Therefore, we will combine the analysis of field data from the Canadian tundra (Trail Valley Creek near Inuvik) and from circum-arctic measurement sites with process modelling to quantify the vegetation - evapotranspiration - permafrost interaction across spatial and temporal scales.
