Project: Data Science for Seismic Hazard and Risk

Besides the catastrophic impact of tectonic earthquakes, the increasing amount of human induced seismicity poses another threat to society, economy and culture. This project aims to build a bridge between modern methods of statistical learning and seismology. Inferences from human induced seismicity will be taken into account to develop statistical models for seismic hazard assessment at locations where tectonic events occur in concert with fluid injection induced earthquakes. Discriminating statistically distinct types of seismicity is crucial to develop reliable hazard assessment models. We intend to improve the quantification of seismic hazard and to forecast seismicity by using (un)supervised learning techniques in combination with physics based models of seismogenic processes as well as improved earthquake detection.
