What is a T-Profile?

Looking outside of one's own (academic) box is part of the program of the Geo.X Young Academy: Since innovative solutions to complex problems require several disciplines, it is beneficial for problem solvers to speak different "languages" to ease understanding and allow for varying points of view. In order to attain better insight not only into your professional experience and academic knowledge, but also your interfacing expertise, interdisciplinary skills and projects. The vertical bar must be filled with relevant information about your academic studies. In the horizontal bar, you can map competencies and activities that transcend or do not relate directly to your field of study.

Project: Near real-time detection of volcano deformation from space: development of a web-based monitoring system using Sentinel-1 SAR data

Volcanic unrest is often characterized by ground deformation, which can in some cases precede the eruption by several months. Satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) has been increasingly used to measure deformation from space, especially in volcanic settings where ground-based monitoring is limited. With the recent completion of the Sentinel-1 satellite constellation, a steady stream of radar data makes routine monitoring of volcanoes worldwide possible. However in order to achieve operational requirements, a fast and flexible processing strategy needs to be designed. The aim of this project is thus to tackle this issue, in order to setup an automated monitoring system whereby continuous near real-time processing and web-publishing of the results can (1) serve volcano observatories for risk management, and (2) enhance our understanding of pre-eruptive and syn-eruptive volcanic processes.
