Dr. I. Kirchner - Freie Universität Berlin
Dr. T. Butler - IASS Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam

Wednesday, September 30 and Friday, October 2, 2015
FU Berlin, Institute for Meteorology

Carl-Heinrich-Becker-Weg 6-10, 12165 Berlin
Old building, PC-Room 59

The WEKUW system (Webbasierte Experimente mit Klima- und Wettermodellen / Webbased experiments with climate and weather models) is designed for e-Learning in climate modelling. It facilitates the students in configuring and running climate models. An unified web interface connects the user, the models, the experiment execution and the analysis of results. Each model in the WEKUW system can be explored under the context of a specific scientific question. In the system few different climate models are implemented: a simple energy balance model, the circulation model PUMA, a regional aerosol chemistry transport model, the planet simulator PLASIM and the complex atmospheric model ECHAM4. As an exercise, a series of 10 year simulations with PLASIM is planned. Each student (or group up to 4) will work with a different parameter set and will analyze the model sensitivity with respect to the parameter changes.
