Dear colleagues from the Geo.X Network,

we invite you to join us for the Geo.X "Grow Your Idea" workshop: Establishing an online hub at U Potsdam during ICDP DeepCHB workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Date: 30 June – 3 July 2026

Place: Universität Potsdam, Campus Golm, Haus 29, Seminarraum Erdgeschoss

Summary

The Chew Bahir basin (CHB) is an outstanding site for paleoclimate studies of the past ~620 kyr within the HSPDP (2008–2022). It has a nearly complete and high-resolution record of climate and environmental conditions, sensitive and well-understood climate proxies, and manageable conditions. We propose to return to this unique location with a new project to core ~900 m beyond the ~300 m base of the Chew Bahir, drilling a total depth of 1,200 m to presumably reach the Quaternary base. ICDP DeepCHB, co-directed by Geo.X member S. Kaboth-Bahr and including co-investigator M.H. Trauth, involves a multi-stage process.

The ICDP DeepCHB workshop, with 40-50 participants, will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 30 June–3 July 2026, organized by S. Kaboth-Bahr, together with colleagues from Ethiopia and elsewhere. To increase participation, and because the workshop will be held at a hotel with a fiber optic connection, an online hub will be set up at U Potsdam. The Geo.X Potsdam-Berlin network includes interested parties, some of whom are applicants of this proposal. The online hub reduces costs and carbon footprint, enabling participants who cannot travel due to other commitments to participate. It also allows young scientists interested in future involvement in the DeepCHB project.
