Summer School Planetary Sciences
The Planetary Sciences initiative strives for gathering teachers and researchers in the evolving and interdisciplinary field of planetary sciences in the Berlin-Potsdam area.
It has been initiated under the auspices of the Joint Geo.X-platform to get together universities and research facilities for the design and conduct of a joint Master program in Planetary Sciences. This field covers a broad topical range in natural sciences, including geology, geomorphology, physics and chemistry, biology, geodesy and cartography as well as astronomy and astrophysics. By that, this field of research provides an outstanding platform for collaborative research in the context of modern planetary exploration. With researchers and teachers from three universities and three large research facilities in Berlin-Potsdam working on a variety of aspects of planetary sciences, the location provides an outstanding backbone for developing new research perspectives and collaborations.
The 2012 Summer School is a broader derivate of the currently established Master program in Geological Sciences with its focus program “Planetary Sciences” that was initiated at the Freie Universität Berlin, Department of Geosciences. It has now become time to lift this program to a broader and interdisciplinary level by integrating additional topics and researchers.
Planetary research fields comprise a variety of different research aspects: the three-day lectures (Mon-Wed) of our Planetary Sciences core program is split into overarching topics covering
Topics
(I) Planetary Surface Processes and Surface Interactions
(II) Planetary Geology and Mineralogy
(III) Planetary Physics and Interiors, Planetary Dynamics
(IV) Astro- and Exobiology
(V) Planetary Cartography and Mapping
We are pleased to offer you a broad overview in a scientifically attractive field. The summer-school lecture program is contributed by teachers and researchers from Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Museum für Naturkunde (MfN), and the Technical University of Berlin (TUB) and is supported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam (GFZ) and the University of Potsdam (UP).
