Physics of Volcanoes
12th German Volcanology Workshop
Geophysics and remote sensing, Geochemistry and Petrology, Hazards and Monitoring
18-20 February 2026
at the University of Potsdam
The local organization committee:
Prof. Dr. Eva Eibl, Alea Joachim, Nele Vesely, Jia-Yun Peng and Gizem Izgi
Description:
The “Physics of Volcanoes” (PoV) workshop will bring together researchers and students from across Germany and Europe to discuss current advances in volcanology and related fields. It will be held from 18-20 February 2026 at the University of Potsdam, Germany. The meeting will bring together scientists from seismology, remote sensing, geochemistry, petrology, mineralogy and volcanic hazard and monitoring to discuss the current state of the art in volcano physics.
Within this workshop we will organise discussion rounds hosted by Geo.X to develop joint publications and proposals. We have currently identified the following topics: (i) linking petrology and seismology to image magma reservoirs, (ii) forecasting and monitoring of eruptions, (iii) recent unrest on the Reykjanes peninsula, (iv) From Signals to Processes: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Real-Time Eruption Characterization, (v) 2D and 3D imaging of volcanic products: From the micro to nano-scale, (vi) Infrastructure topic: new satellites or EPOS for volcano monitoring - start Eyjafjallajökull, (vii) Where, how long, at what conditions and in what geometric form do eruptible magmas reside in the shallow crust prior to eruption, (viii) Planetary analogue terrains for (cryo)volcanism on Earth.
POV workshops are completely free, also this year again!
Registration and programme can be found here: https://www.volcano.yourweb.de/
Application deadline is January 14!
We look forward to welcoming you to this exciting event!
Organizers Geo.X-hosted discussion: Eva Eibl (University of Potsdam), Thomas Walter (GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences), Melanie Sieber (TU Berlin)
