Geo.X Grow Your Idea Roundtable on
"Foundation models for planetary interiors"

Date: February 23, 2026, 10:00 to 15:00

Venue: German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Mitte, Berlin

Contact Person: Siddhant Agarwal (siddhant.agarwal@dlr.de)

Foundation models, i.e., AI models trained on vast amounts of heterogeneous data have not only enjoyed success in language and vision domains, but have also gained traction in scientific domains such as weather predictions, marine biogeochemistry, and materials science. This series of roundtable talks aims to bring together research groups in the Geo.X network working with computational models of planetary interiors dynamics to discuss the potential of a foundation model. Specifically, we would like to gain a better understanding of what a useful foundation model looks like for geodynamic studies, whether such an endeavour is interesting to the community, and if so, how we could collaborate moving forward on generating and collecting numerical simulations and training such a model through joint HPC and research proposals.

The first workshop will begin with lightning one-minute introductions from all participants, providing an overview of research interests across the group. This will be followed by invited presentations covering numerical modeling, planetary physics studies, scientific AI, and differentiable physics. The program also includes focused group discussions centered on dataset generation, benchmarking and intercomparison of numerical codes, and the appropriate scope and capabilities of AI models for geodynamics.

If this workshop has piqued your interest, please fill out this short application form before February 3rd 2026
