The Evolving Role of Geoscience: Rethinking Disciplinary Boundaries in a Changing World - Inter and Trans Disciplinary Dialogue Session

As we advance through the 21st century, complex political, economic, social, and environmental transformations underscore the crucial and evolving role of the geosciences in understanding and addressing these challenges. But what does this mean for researchers whose work is in or intersects with the geosciences?

The geosciences are in the spotlight like never before, with concepts like the Anthropocene sharpening public and political attention on climate change, earth systems, energy transitions, critical minerals and hazard awareness and risk management. Over the past few decades there is increasing interdisciplinary interest in how the geosciences connect with geopolitics, sustainability, technology, social justice, and ethics, gaining visibility in academic and public debate. Media, art, and education now feature planetary thinking and Anthropocene narratives, rooted in geoscientific concepts and research funding often prioritises Earth system science and climate resilience.

This dialogue session will serve as an invitation and a space for all participants to enter into the type of inter- and trans disciplinary conversation they too rarely get to have about their work as it intersects with the multi-layered, interconnected, and dynamic challenges, encompassing natural, social, and ethical dimensions.

For this reason, the session will bring together experts from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, and sustainability research. Concretely, the session goals are (1) to identify synergies and connections between research of the geo.x proposal partners and beyond, (2) to explore the evolving role of the geosciences and how this is perceived and experienced across the gathered disciplines, and (3) to explore possibilities for future inter and transdisciplinary research projects on these topics.
