Our guest is Matija Šuklje from Free Software Foundation Europe (*), giving a workshop on
How to Properly License your Research

Abstract: The seminar will consist of two parts – a theoretical overview and a practical workshop – each being 45' long.

In the first part, we will look at the broader picture of copyright and licensing options available for your work, with an emphasis on computer programs. This will encompass the full spectrum with EULAs and full copyright on one side and the most libertarian of Free Software (also known as Open Source) licenses on the other. We will also make a short excursion into free/open data and documentation licenses.

In the second part, we will hold a workshop on how to actually license your work. On a few real examples we will learn the technicalities on how to apply a license to your work (e.g. license text, licensing headers, listing authors etc.) and discuss some pitfalls.

During both sessions, participants are encouraged to interrupt the speaker with questions and practical issues they have encountered before. At the end of both sessions, participants should have a broad understanding of Free/Open licenses, be able to choose the right license and properly license their work.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you!

on behalf of the GeoSim seminar committee
