Electron microprobe analysis using a field emission gun allows chemical characterization of geomaterials even below the 1 µm scale. Raman spectroscopy relies on the scattering of light and allows the structural and in part chemical characterization of liquid and solid material. The structural data can be acquired on 1 µm scale and thus is ideal to complement the micro-chemical information derived from electron microprobe. The course gives a basic introduction to these techniques using examples of research on impact cratering and meteorites.
