Welcome to Arts & Science

Since 2023, we have been exploring what science can learn from the arts and vice versa. In particular, we want to know how transdisciplinary storytelling can help us communicate science and, at the same time, reflect on the assumptions and personal backgrounds that shape our research. During this endeavour, we have hosted several workshops with actors, musicians, and journalists, resulting in a short film and several audio projects.

Our workshops

2026 Workshop “Transdisciplinary Storytelling – How do we know?" funded by ECS Community Grant
What knowledge is essential to your research but never makes it into a paper? Together, with 17 early career scientists from five Geo.X institutions, we explored how we can organise our research, highlight key content and communicate core messages clearly. We dived deeper in what matters to us in our research and work and how to translate this to effective science communication.

2025-2026 Workshops on “How do we know? An auditory exploration of knowledge production”
Together with the FERN.lab - Innovation Lab and the GeoEnergie Allianz Berlin-Brandenburg (GEB²), we aimed to present the work and research of scientific research groups/projects in a multi-layered way. To this end, short audio stories (approx. 10 minutes) were created that not only convey scientific content, but also shed light on personal stories, emotions and motivations behind the research. You can find the audio stories on the right.

2024 Workshops on transdisciplinary storytelling and co-creation of a short film
Together with eight early career scientists from Geo.X, we explored transdisciplinary storytelling by using non-scientific narrations to learn about storytelling beyond modern western world views. We used acting techniques to reimagine storytelling in this part experiment, part creative exploration. You can find the collaborative short film called “How to Begin” on the right. This movie serves as a reflection and documentation of this process and hopefully, stimulate thinking and discussion on knowledge and storytelling.
