We hereby cordially invite you to the Geo.X Lecture Series "Introduction to Social Sciences for Natural Scientists"!

The lecture takes place online on Mondays at 1:30pm via Zoom.
The event will offer a 45-minute talk and a 15 - 30 minute Q&A session.

We are happy to have Prof. Dr. Petra Lucht from TU Berlin giving a talk on: "Transdisciplinary Research on ‘Gender’ in Science, Technology, and Society"

Abstract:
In the first part of this presentation a programmatic matrix that links three areas of research and teaching will be outlined: (1) taxonomies of research on gender in science, technology, and society, (2) research paradigms in gender studies, and (3) transdisciplinarity. The presentation will refer to a three-folded taxonomy of gender in science, technology and society: (a) research on professional cultures, (b) research on knowledge and (c) research on technological artifacts and innovation. Also references to ‚gender theories on the move‘ are made in a way that resonates with women’s studies, gender research, gender studies, queer studies, disability studies, intersectionality, new materialism, ecofeminism and postcolonial studies. ‘gender’ for that matter, is not a pre-existing entity but a result of a temporary fabrications of historical, social and political processes. In the second part I offer case studies of research-based teaching and of research projects on gender in science, technology, and society at my chair in “Gender in MINT und Planung / Feminist STS”. These case studies show how fabrications of ‘gender’ in relation to STEM may shape everyday knowledge and everyday life in society. It is necessary to integrate such knowledge on ‘gender’ fabrications into the curricula and research areas of STEM and planning disciplines to enable scientists and engineers to consider and evaluate solutions to Grand. Only then can we aspire a gender- and diversity-just sustainable future.

Petra Lucht is Professor at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies at TU Berlin, where she holds the Chair “Gender in MINT und Planung / Feminist Studies in Science, Technology and Society (Feminist STS)”. She studied physics at the University of Kiel (Germany) and completed her doctoral degree in sociology at the University of Hamburg while carrying out research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) and Harvard University in the United States. Currently, she researches and teaches in the field of Gender Studies in Science, Technology and Engineering. She is also well known for her work on ethnographic case studies of physics laboratories in Germany and the US.
