Geo.X Grow Your Idea Workshop on "Linking Terrestrial and Planetary Boulder Research"

  Event

Date: 5th December 2025

Venue:  German Aerospace Center (DLR), Rutherfordstraße 2, 12489 Berlin

Contact Person: Katharina Otto (DLR)

Dear colleagues from the Geo.X Network,

we invite you to join the upcoming Geo.X Grow Your Idea Workshop “Linking Terrestrial and Planetary Boulder Research”. The focus of this meeting is to initiate collaborative research and combining expertise from different institutes to better understand what boulders can tell us about the environment they are found in.

Date: 5th of December 2025

Place: German Aerospace Center (DLR), Rutherfordstraße 2, 12489 Berlin

Summary

The goal of this workshop is to enable knowledge exchange and foster collaborations among researchers that specialize in the characterization of boulders. By bringing together different scientific perspectives on the interpretation of boulder morphology, mobility and arrangements on Earth and other planetary bodies, we aim is to gain a comprehensive understanding of these diverse planetary features. We will discuss and interpret observations and data from fieldwork, remote sensing and computer modelling. We particularly welcome early career scientists and students to join our workshop to explore research possibilities and connect with experienced researchers.

In Detail

Our first workshop will focus on getting to know the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the participants. Specifically, the group at DLR will give an introduction on extraterrestrial boulder morphology and distributions derived from remote sensing image data from asteroids, the group at the MfN will show their recent work concerning boulder arrangements and motion in the Atacama Desert in Chile and colleagues from the University of Potsdam will share their knowledge in fluvial boulder motion and morphologies. Combining this expertise is promising in guiding the understanding of boulder characteristics throughout the solar system by offering the opportunity to discuss the topic from different perspectives and learn from each other’s research. We encourage interested scientists from the Berlin-Brandenburg region to join our workshop and share their research. Please email katharina.otto@dlr.de to register for the workshop.

Registration Deadline: 31st of October 2025

With best regards
Katharina Otto
