Energy from agro-industry wastes: The quest for more recovery by anaerobic digestion. In the past decades, anaerobic digestion was mainly considered to be a technology to 'remove' wastes ; recently the focus has changed drastically. Biological methane production is now a central process in the production of energy at the MegaWatt level, and it fits also in the recovery of nutrients and even water from secondary but also primary materials The lecture covers a number of considerations with respect the microbiology and its management as the potential of anaerobic digestion is constantly expanding . Subsequently, several recent process technical tools are evaluated as eg the bio-electrochemical systems and the membrane reactor systems . Moreover , the feed stocks currently applied are examined . Finally, some future potentials and challenges of AD are discussed in the light of the developing bio-economy.
