Dear colleagues,
you are kindly invited to join the following talk, you'll find the Zoom link at the bottom of this message:
Imaging electrical properties of crust and mantle from surface to the core using ground and satellite observations
given by Alexander Grayver, ETH Zürich,
on Tuesday, November 16 at 11:00 am
Alexander Grayver has received a prestigious Heisenberg fellowship on which he plans to come to Potsdam (University and/or GFZ) from next year on. He will be visiting GFZ to explore options and discuss potential for collaborations on November 16 and 17. If you would like to meet and discuss with him (in person) after his talk please let me know or contact him directly at agrayver@erdw.ethz.ch.
Please find the abstract of his presentation with more information on his areas of expertise below.
Abstract:
Electrical conductivity is among few geophysical properties that can be sensed remotely. Because of its high sensitivity to even small amounts of fluids, it is a key variable in studying geothermal systems, volcanos as well as large-scale hydration and partial melting processes at depth. In this presentation, I will show how growing volumes of ground observations alongside unique data from the ESA Swarm constellation create opportunities in imaging electrical conductivity across scales, but also expose a high demand for next generation methods that can take full advantage of new data sets. In addition, we will see that accurate modelling of electromagnetic signals induced in the mantle is vital for reconstruction of core field dynamics, space weather hazard evaluation, and inference of ocean climatology variations from satellite-detected tidal magnetic signals.
We look forward to seeing you on Zoom:
