  Dates & Events

Invitation

by Onno Oncken and Fabrice Cotton (GFZ)

We would like to draw your attention to a POF cross-topic workshop on the general topic of «TRANSIENTS»

When: May 10, 2017

Transient cross-topic workshop

Continuous, real-time and multi-parameters observation is going to change the way Earth science is conducted over the next 10 to 20 years. These new measurements are fuelling breakthroughs across the Earth sciences as unexpected «transient» changes are revealed.

  • A variety of seismic behaviour emerges with different signatures such a tremors, low frequency earthquakes both observed along tectonic faults and during fluid injection experiments;
  • Slow earthquakes, revealed by continuous GPS data, may modify the earthquake clock;
  • Relative temporal changes of seismic velocity smaller than 10-3 have been detected a few days before volcanic eruptions;
  • Reduction and subsequent recovery of ground strength seems to be associated to landslides;
  • Seismic velocity variations exhibit a correlation with the occurrence of earthquake and post-seismic relaxation
  • Seismic as well as aseismic slip on faults varies at a range of temporal scales beyond the individual earthquake rupture ….

These examples show that we need to couple seismological, tectonic and geodetic analysis to capture these new “transients” and address the problem of the newly discovered changing Earth. We encourage the contributions associated to the observation and analysis of these transient changes. Ideas associated to transdisciplinary and innovative instrumentations projects are also welcome.
