The World is Changing Abstract:

The world is changing. Our science is increasingly global, as we recognize the challenges of understanding interconnected Earth systems, meeting the rising global demand for mineral and energy resources, handling trade offs regarding sustainable development, and reducing the risks of natural disasters that impact the global economy. The geosciences are vital to meeting these societal challenges. Jonathan Price will present in his lecture the challenges and opportunities of a changing world and GSA's contribution to meet those challenges.

Jonathan Price is a consulting geologist and the Nevada State Geologist Emeritus. Jon was the State Geologist and Director of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, a research and public service unit of the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1988 until his retirement from the University in 2012. Since 2015 he is the President of the Geological Society of America (GSA).

Jonathan Price has recently been evaluating global trends in mineral-resource production with an emphasis on opportunities for exploration. His current research also includes the evaluation of copper, zinc, gold, and other ores for byproduct production of critical elements, particularly those needed for emerging technologies.
