Working groups

The Geo.X working groups are the driving force behind Geo.X. They are formed on a temporary basis to address topical issues and initiatives proposed by the Steering Group members, e.g. research areas that are to be the subject of large-scale joint projects or collaborations relating to infrastructure, teaching or public relations.

On the basis of thematic discussions and with due regard to the existing structural framework, the structural working groups set out to provide the management teams at the Geo.X institutes with fully coordinated recommendations for the concerted development of the Earth sciences within the region.

WG Advanced Seismology

Seismology is a methodology in the field of Earth Sciences, which is used in a variety of applications and comprises many questions. The seismological expertise at the GFZ is spread over many sections, and also at the universities many groups deal with seismological issues or apply seismological techniques. While all groups have their own methodologies or objectives and cooperate in many ways, there is a chance to benefit even more from each other. The aim of the strategic partnership is to improve networking in research and doctoral training in the research area Potsdam / Berlin, in order to achieve synergies and promote innovation.

WG Hydrogeology

Groundwater is an important component of the water cycle, which is controlled and influenced by a variety of processes. The underground circulation systems of groundwater have a difficult-to-understand complexity because they are not directly accessible. The collection and description of groundwater systems and their replication in experiments and models therefore represents a particular challenge for scientific research. This includes the scientific characterization of factors and processes that influence the quality and quantity of groundwater, as well as their development in space and time. The aim of the working group Hydrogeology is to bundle, create and promote offers that go beyond the offers of the individual participating universities, especially in the area of ​​teaching for students and young scientists of the Berlin-Potsdam region.

Microanalytical RM Working Group

Obtaining reliable geochemical data is critically dependent upon the availability of high-quality Reference Materials (RMs -- also referred to as "standards"). Such samples are needed for both machine calibration and data quality control. This need for well characterized RMs is especially critical for microanalytical methods where machine calibration is often influence by the composition of the material under investigation.

The Geo.X working group on RMs brings together leaders from microanalytical laboratories of member institutions -- as well as experts in this topic from nearby institutions -- who require such materials in order to perform their research. The goal of this group is to identify and characterize new mineral samples for calibrating geochemical applications and then to make these materials available to the global geochemical community as much as possible.

WG Geoeducation

The Workgroup GeoEd-BB fosters an increasing engagement in Earth Science Education and the development of new Earth science related teaching and learning materials as well of innovative concepts for teacher education. GeoEd-BB aims towards establishing a regional center of competence that is focused on new mitigation and communication concepts for Earth science issues targeting school and out-of-school education.

WG Geothermal Energy

Ein großes Potenzial für die Energiewende liegt in der Nutzung der Geothermie zur Stromerzeugung oder Wärmebereitstellung. Seit vielen Jahren bildet die Tiefengeothermie einen Forschungsschwerpunkt am GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ). Gemeinsam mit den Berliner und Potsdamer Universitäten (FUB, TUB, UP) wurden bereits zahlreiche nationale wie internationale Forschungsprojekte durchgeführt, die sich mit der Geothermie von der Erkundung, Erschließung bis hin zur Kraftwerkstechnik befassen.

Die Zielsetzung des Arbeitskreises ist vorrangig die Sichtbarkeit der geothermischen Expertise in der regionalen Hochschullandschaft zu erhöhen. Den Studierenden sollen die Themenfelder der Geothermie und der unterschiedlichen Lehrveranstaltungen an den Berliner und Potsdamer Universitäten (UP, FUB und TUB) durch eine verbesserte Koordination und Abstimmung der unterschiedlichen Lehrveranstaltungen zur Geothermie an näher gebracht werden. Langfristig wird auch die Entwicklung eines geothermischen Curriculums angestrebt.
