Dear all,

We are very pleased to announce our fourth “Landscapes Live” online seminar of 2021 by Karl Lang (Georgia Tech) that will occur this week on Thursday 4th March at 7 am PST / 10 am EST / 3 pm GMT / 4 pm CET on:

Linking orogeny and orography in the Southern Alps of New Zealand

Abstract: Numerical and analog models predict that the shape and structure of convergent plate boundary orogens are sensitive to climatic variables that augment the pace and pattern of surface erosion. My research tests these predictions in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, a natural laboratory where orographic precipitation has concentrated erosion to the windward side of an obliquely convergent plate boundary orogen. In this talk, I reconstruct a detailed exhumation history from a combination of detrital fission-track and (U-Th)/He thermochronology from samples of the Waiho-1 – a 3.7 km deep borehole in the western foreland basin only 14 km from the Alpine Fault. My results indicate that orogen exhumation is both spatially and temporally correlated to orographic precipitation patterns, strong evidence to support a link between orogeny and orography in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

This seminar will be live on Zoom and open to anyone interested (with a limit of 300 participants). You can register in advance for this Zoom meeting here:

After registering, you should receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. We will also post the Zoom link for this meeting on the seminar website: https://osur.univ-rennes1.fr/LandscapesLive/.

The Landscapes Live online seminar series will then continue the following weeks with:

  • Thursday 11th March at  3 pm GMT/ 4 pm CET: Ajay Limaye, University of Virginia
  • Thursday 18th March at 3 pm GMT/ 4 pm CET: Roman DiBiase, Pennsylvania State University
  • Thursday 25th March at 3 pm GMT/ 4 pm CET: Simon Mudd, University of Edinburgh

Previous talks are available on the website (https://osur.univ-rennes1.fr/LandscapesLive/). We are already planning a second seminar series this spring. Feel free to contact us if you have questions or suggestions: landscapesliveseminar@gmail.com
