In the framework of the qualification program of the DFG-funded International Research Training Group “StRATEGy”, we are offering a short course on geodynamic modelling. It will take place from 15th to 18th of May at the University of Potsdam, Germany (Campus Golm). The course will be given by Sascha Brune and Anne Glerum from GFZ Potsdam.
The maximum number of participants is 16.
The short course will provide an introduction to geodynamic modelling by combining the following topics: rheology on geological time scales, lithospheric strength profiles, plate tectonic reconstructions as a link between regional and global scale geodynamics, analogue and numerical modelling concepts, introduction to continuum mechanics, numerical solution strategies and their application in solid Earth deformation, and the role of initial and boundary conditions in modelling. The course involves lectures and hands-on modelling exercises employing the open-source geodynamic modelling software ASPECT, which will be used to model key geodynamic processes like mantle convection, continental rifting, and subduction. Additional exercises will employ GPlates and Matlab. The course is suitable for master and PhD students of geosciences. Previous experience in computational geodynamics or numerical modelling methods is not required.
