  Scientific Talks

Date: Thursday, 23rd of January 2020, 11:00 a.m.

Venue: GFZ Campus Telegrafenberg Potsdam, Building A45 (AWI), Room S101

Host: Dr Joseph M. Magnall, Scientist at Section 3.1: “Inorganic and Isotope Geochemistry” & Dr.-Ing. Thomas Reinsch, Group Leader at Section 4.8: “Geoenergy”, GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences

Speaker: Prof. Murray W. Hitzman, Ph.D., Professor at University College Dublin / Director of iCRAG - Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences

Topic 8: Georesources for the Energy Transition and a High-Tech Society

As we seek to negotiate the energy transition and support a growing circular economy we face 2 major challenges: (1) where do we find the resources that we need today and in the future, and; (2) how do we access these resources in a sustainable way?

The research in Topic 8 will explore the close links between natural and engineered systems, and will combine observations from modern hydrothermal and geothermal systems with studies of their ancient analogs. Topic 8 will explore the complex interactions between the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere, which determine the occurrence and distribution of resources and energy as well as the environmental risks associated with their development on a rapidly changing Earth. This research requires new and large-scale observational approaches that include not only resource detection, but also environmental impact analysis, data integration and analytics, complex time-series studies; together with stronger links between field observation, natural laboratories, experimentation, and modeling workflows.

The Topic 8 seminar series will showcase the latest research in the field of Georesources on a monthly basis, and aims to be accessible and welcoming to all those who are interested on the Telegrafenberg.
